On the Gulf with Captain Dencil Powell

If you have never gone scalloping you must at least experience this once in your lifetime. It is an amazing feeling to be out there in the Gulf, where silence and serenity surrounds you.

The water was just right. Our snorkels, mask and handy nets gave us the upper hand to fill our bag full of scallops. The challenging thing about scalloping is seeking those hidden within the tall grass.

Friday was my first experience at scalloping. The easy going, funny and knowledgeable Capt. Dencil Powell, of the Rajun Cajun Fishin’ Charters brought us to some great spots.

“Fishing is my life, I love teaching everybody what I love to do and let them explore what Florida Nature Coast has to offer,” Dencil Powell said.

Powell takes pride in what he does along with his mate Capt. Josh Fritz from Chase n’ Tails Fishing Charters. Both captains share fishing spots and give their clients the best experience, whether it be scalloping, or fishing for Redfish or Snook. Snook season opens on September 1st.

Scallop Season is coming to a close in Hernando County but you still have until September 5. Serve your family some Spicy Bacon-Wrapped Scallops and brag about how you caught dinner.
