Congratulations to Chocachatti Elementary School teachers, staff, administrators and students who have earned a much-deserved Four Star Award for their outstanding MicroSociety program. They join a very exclusive group of only 5 other MicroSociety schools out of 300 to have earned this rating of excellence for 2015-2016.
Since it opened its doors in 1999, Chocachatti, one of Hernando County Schools’ magnet schools, has hosted this unique program that uses “micro” versions of a real community to engage students in their learning. In fact, students take the lead in the CES MicroSociety. They create resumes and apply for dozens of jobs in the society. Students maintain order by operating a courtroom, study the rules of finance through their micro-bank, grow plants, develop entrepreneurial spirit by running small businesses, performing stand-up comedy or by interacting with any of over 65 other programs.
“I could not be more proud of this team and our community partners. Because of their hard work and commitment to making our MicroSociety such a strong program, students are able to learn by directly engaging in dynamic, real-world experiences,” Principal Lara Silva said.
In addition to the Four Star Award, the MicoSociety International has also awarded Silvina Doherty with the 2015-2016 George Award, given to those members of the school staff who make notable contributions to the success of the program. As the coordinator for CES’ MicroSociety, Doherty collaborates with staff and manages the day-to-day operation. “Chocachatti’s MicroSociety would not be what it is without Silvina’s dedication, organization and creativity. We are so grateful for her leadership,” Silva said.
