Public Information Officer Karen Jordan shared these recent accomplishments at the 09.06.16 School Board meeting:
• The Hernando County School District Finance Department was awarded the highest honor in governmental accounting, the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting (CAFR).
• JoAnn Forcino, who has 32 years of experience as an educator at various levels, has been named Supervisor of Student Services.
• Hurricane Hermine
Safety and Security Officer Bill Hall was recognized for his work as the liaison between the school district and the Hernando County EOC before and during Hurricane Hermine.
Transportation Director Ralph Leath, Assistant Director Chris Mundell, and Kerri Hartley coordinated the use of school buses and four drivers for evacuations.
Facilities Operations Director Erik Van de Boogaard and his team checked school sites for damage following the storm.
Warehouse Manager Genele Firlik made cots available for use by evacuees.
• To show where and how the Half-Cent Sales Tax is being used at area schools, Jordan showed an example of a sign at JD Floyd Elementary. The second phase of the roof repair will begin there soon, she said.
• A Workforce Summit, hosted by Suncoast Technical, is scheduled for October 12. The goal of the summit is to determine what local employers need, and how the curriculum can be adapted to keep pace with trends. The summit will take place at the Florida National Guard Armory. An advisory meeting will be held at the site on the same day.
• The HCSD mobile app was used during Hurricane Hermine to notify families of school closures and other events. The app is free and can be used for bus routes/schedules, pay for school lunches, and to access podcasts, school forms, and to receive school news.
