A constant refrain is that the Tampa area is in need of cybersecurity talent. The problem is that most job openings are for people with experience, so how do you start out? There are many college programs to get you started, but most likely it will require more than a college degree to get your first job in cybersecurity.

Rocco Maglio, CISSP

Cybersecurity is a specialization of information technology. You first need an understanding of computers and networking. As you gain experience, you can work towards a career in cybersecurity.

The cybersecurity field has tremendous opportunity for growth. In the near future, more and more businesses are going to have actively protect themselves from cyber threats. This means that there will be many opportunities for growth for people already in the field.

Once you have the information technology experience a good way to demonstrate cybersecurity knowledge is either a certification or degree. Pasco Hernando State College, the University of South Florida (USF) and Saint Leo University offer cybersecurity degrees with USF also being home to the Florida Center for Cybersecurity.

In addition to these Universities, there is a highly regarded worldwide cybersecurity certification authority organization ISC2 headquartered in Clearwater.

Cybersecurity is only going to become more important as we become more and more connected. It is currently an issue in the Presidential election, with leaks from hackers affecting the campaigns. Many people and businesses place everything on connected devices and need help in keeping this information secure.
