A wide variety pumpkins are perking up Hernando County’s Fall season. With many pumpkin patches from Spring Hill to Brooksville, there are pumpkins available in a multitude of colors, shapes and sizes for everyone to choose from.
Pumpkins originated in Central America and farmers produce over 1,500,000,000 billion pounds of pumpkins a year! The world’s largest pumpkin weighed was 2,323.7 pounds grown by Beni Meier of Germany. He broke the world record in 2014- that’s a lot a pumpkin pie!
Pumpkins are a member of the gourd family and seeds should be planted the latter part of the month in May and the mid weeks of June. They can take up to 120 days to grow and are best picked in October. Their seeds can be saved to grow new pumpkins the next year.
