Since October 9th the PHSC baseball team has been hitting the field filling their 12 game Fall season schedule. November 13, against the Carrollwood Gators was their final game.
The Fall season gives the opportunity for freshman players to showcase their skills and potentially earn a starting position. Sophomore players fine tune and make adjustments, in hitting or field techniques, increasing their scouting potential for the upcoming Spring season.
“Fall is pretty much just evaluation, everybody gets to showcase what they can do…everyone is given pretty much an equal opportunity,” Head Coach Stephen Winterling said. “Now we got to figure out who’s going to be the guys starting in the spring when it all counts.”
With seven sophomores and twenty freshmen on the 2017 roster, these Fall season games give the team an opportunity to improve communication and becoming stronger as a team.
“Getting better playing their best and performing. We had some guys like today; some guys perform while other guys didn’t perform. Some guys are improving and some guys aren’t and that is going to decide who’s in the starting lineup in the spring,” said Winterling.
He explained that for the next couple of months there will be less field challenges, the focus now is strengthening and conditioning as well as developing players’ techniques.
“We have to get more consistency with the pitching staff and definitely the defense, infield plays got to get better,” Winterling said.
On January 27 – 28, 2017 PHSC will start their season in Tallahassee against Tallahassee Community College.
