Ernie Chatman, the remarkable and beloved coach, left an impact on so many lives. The City of Brooksville wanted to commemorate his 40-year legacy in a way that would be meaningful. Council member Frankie Burnett had the perfect suggestion: name a field at Tom Varn park after Chatman.
At the recommendation of the City Council, Parks and Recreation Facilities Director Mike Walker brought the matter to the Parks Advisory Board. The suggested name, “Ernie Chatman Field at Tom Varn Stadium” was unanimously approved at their 10/20/16 meeting.
Walker said the Varn family was “ecstatic and more than happy” when they were contacted. He said the Chatman family is also pleased that Brooksville is taking this action.
A dedication ceremony, in which the name of the field will be officially changed, will be held on 02/21/17. Walker said the Hernando High School girls’ softball team will be able to play their first home game at Ernie Chatman field at Tom Varn Stadium. You can be sure they will give their best effort.
