In August of 2015, the Hernando County BOCC agreed to purchase the Tampa Bay Times building on Highway 50 for $4.15 million to consolidate the Utilities Department offices. In the December 13, 2016 BOCC meeting a request was brought by Budget Manager Pamela Lee for $116,505 to perform a partial roof replacement of the building. The roof replacement is in addition to the $140K in Air Conditioning Repairs that were approved at the May 24, 2016 meeting.

The roof repair is recommended since “On August 2, 2016, an emergency purchase order (PO) was issued to Roof USA for repair of a leak at the HCUD building. On September 27, 2016, another emergency PO was issued to Roof USA because of yet another roof leak. Emergency quote #17-C00013/PH was issued for the partial roof replacement of this building.

Two quotes were received in response to the roof replacement request. The quote from Roof USA, LLC og Brooksville, FL was for $129,370. The quote from Southern Roofing Company, Inc. of Tampa, FL was for $116,505. The utilities department staff recommended “awarding the contract to the lowest, responsive, responsible bidder Southern Roofing”.

Commissioner Nick Nicholson asked for clarification as to whether the whole flat roof or a portion of the flat roof was being replaced. He was under the impression that the roof was in such bad shape the whole roof had to be replaced. Gordon Onderdonk stated that the entire flat roof is being replaced and the curved metal roof is in good shape and does not need to be replaced. That is why they refer to it as a partial roof replacement.

The vote to replace the flat roof on the building passed unanimously. A purchase order will be created and a notice to proceed will be issued to Southern Roofing.
