Florida-Friendly Landscaping (formally Florida Yards and Neighborhoods) is a creation of the University of Florida to provide residents and those in green industry professions with nine landscaping principles to follow. These principles guide them in the quest for environmentally responsible landscapes which protect our water resources.
My name is Lilly Browning and I am the Hernando County Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program Coordinator. My position is funded under the Water Conservation Department at Hernando County Utilities. The nine principles are as follows: 1.) Right Plant, Right Place 2.) Water Efficiently 3.) Fertilize Appropriately 4.) Mulch 5.) Attract Wildlife 6.) Manage Yard Pests Responsibly 7.) Recycle 8.) Reduce Stormwater Runoff 9.) Protect the Waterfront
Cooperating with Dr. Lester and County Extension, I provide classes based on these principles at libraries and other locations. I speak to clubs and associations as well as providing educational programs for school children. Dr. Lester and I are also part of a team of instructors for the Green Industries Best Management Practices training provided for professional fertilizer applicators. This training allows them to earn their state certification to apply fertilizer to their customer’s lawns and landscapes.
Homeowners interested in promoting Florida-Friendly Landscaping may apply to have their property certified as a “Florida-Friendly Landscape.” Rain Barrels play an important part in a Florida-Friendly yard, and FFL offers educational rain barrel workshops. To find out more contact me at:
