On March 25 the Hernando County Bar Association held their annual 5k race at the Weeki Wachee Preserve off Osowaw Blvd. They have been holding this event since 2011. Around 160 to 170 people ran in the 5k this year which was a significant increase over last year’s participation with approximately 110 racers.
This event raises money for the scholarships awarded by the Hernando County Bar Association. This year the Bar is awarding four college scholarships for $1,000 to students of Hernando County interested in a law-related field (including law enforcement and paralegal studies)
The deadline to apply for the scholarships is April 14, 2017. The applicant must be a Hernando County resident and enrolled full-time or part-time at a Florida College or University currently or by the fall semester of 2017. The applicant must be interested in pursuing a career in law or a law-related field (including law enforcement and paralegal studies). The applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or greater in high school and, if applicable, at his or her current university. While announcing the winners race director Erin Daly quipped when announcing one of the age division top finishers that had tripped, “remember that you signed a waiver”. A little bit of legal humor.
Lisa Steinkamp one of the participants said that it is encouraging to see kids running in the race. After the 5k is finished the Bar association held a 1 mile fun run, which was popular with the kids.
