On May 15th, the Brooksville City Council held a meeting to discuss current parking and fine policies through the Brooksville Police Department. Cliff Taylor, on behalf of Hogan Law Firm, went before the Council to propose an ordinance regarding an increase to parking fees from five dollars to ten.
The ordinance would apply to all municipal city lots and will include any overtime parking.
Mayor Robert Battista was the first to voice concern over distinguishing what areas would be in consideration for this ordinance. Given the fact that some employees use particular spots throughout the entire day, it was suggested that the municipality can establish varying forms of restricted parking- using proper signage either on the vehicles themselves or on the lot- but ultimately it is at the discretion of the police chief and the council.
Another issue that was brought to order was the narrowing down of the definition of ‘unlawful parking’ and where specifically these restrictions would apply and to what specific vehicles. It was argued that the wording is too vague and should be ironed out prior to moving forward with approval.
The Council made a unanimous decision to approve the ordinance for a follow up reading that will take place in a public hearing in two weeks.
