On 06-19-17 at approximately 4 a.m., Hernando County deputies responded to the Gold-N-Pawnd II store, located at 5224 Mariner Boulevard in Spring Hill, regarding a Commercial Alarm.
Upon arrival, deputies observed the glass in the front door of the business to be broken out.
While responding to the call, Sergeant William Hillman observed a dark colored vehicle leaving the area of the business on Mariner Boulevard. The driver was travelling at a high rate of speed. Sergeant Hillman was unable to catch up to the vehicle and did not pursue it.
The vehicle, later determined to be a blue Hyundai Sonata bearing Florida tag/Z2LPL, was then observed by Deputy Tom Cameron, travelling west Northcliffe Boulevard. Cameron attempted to conduct a traffic stop and the driver fled, at a high rate of speed, turning northbound on Deltona. The driver of the Sonata continued to flee from Cameron, turning eastbound onto Cortez Boulevard. Deputy Cameron disengaged.
A short time later, Deputy Victor Latty observed the Sonata travelling eastbound on Cortez Boulevard at Barclay Avenue. The driver failed to stop at the red light and continued eastbound. The driver then turned southbound onto the Suncoast Parkway. Deputy Latty activated his emergency lights in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. Again, the driver of the Sonata fled from the deputy. Deputy Latty disengaged.
As Deputy Latty travelled southbound on the Suncoast Parkway, he observed smoke and what appeared to be a crash. The Sonata became involved in a single vehicle crash on the side of the road.
As Deputy Latty approached the crash site, he observed four black males running from the vehicle. Deputy Latty again turned on his emergency lights and gave all individuals lawful orders to stop. All individuals continued to flee from Latty, disregarding his lawful order to stop.
During the next several hours numerous patrol deputies, two HCSO K-9 Units, aviation, and two K-9 teams (one from the Florida Department of Corrections and one from the Sumter Correctional Institute) searched the area of Pristine Place, Hibiscus Springs Apartments, and surrounding neighborhoods for the suspects.
Deputy Brandon Cox and K-9 Judge located one suspect on Dow Lane, Corporal Steve Miller and K-9 Justice caught one suspect at the south end of Catfish Lane (Hibiscus Springs Apartments), and Sergeant Scott Reak caught the third suspect at Barclay Avenue and Powell Road. At least one additional suspect was still at large; however, after conducting an exhaustive search for five hours, deputies were unable to locate that individual(s).
Detectives contacted the owner of the Sonata, who was from the Orlando area. The owner was unaware the vehicle had been taken and subsequently reported it stolen.
During the search for the suspects, deputies learned that one of them had entered into the garage area of a residence on Carlisle Drive in Pristine Place to elude law enforcement. The homeowner was at home at the time and did observe the suspect inside his garage. The homeowner was able to provide deputies with a detailed description of the individual (who was later captured).
During this time, detectives were on scene at the Gold-N-Pawnd conducting their investigation. Investigation revealed that the suspects broke the glass on the door but were unable to make entry into the business due to the burglar bars on the doors. Obviously, since the suspects were unable to gain entry into the business, they were unable to steal guns or money, their targeted items (as they later told detectives).
Post Miranda, all three suspects admitted to detectives that they had travelled to Spring Hill from Orlando to commit the burglary at Gold-N-Pawnd. The trio also admitted that the driver of the Sonata fled from deputies when traffic stops were attempted.
All three suspects were placed under arrest by District Two detectives.
Additional investigation revealed that two suspects were still at large.
On 06-20-17, Detective Eric Dunn received a call from Christina Pickard of Orlando. Pickard advised that her son, Elijah, admitted to her that he had been involved in this case. Pickard advised Dunn that she would be bringing Elijah to Hernando County to turn himself in.
Detectives met with Pickard and her son later that day and escorted them to the District Two office. Post Miranda, Elijah Pickard admitted to his involvement in the case.
A pick-up order (warrant for a juvenile) has been issued for the remaining suspect.
