The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office has published their budget for FY 2015-2016. In a letter to the BOCC the sheriff highlighted cost savings programs that they have implemented. One such cost saving change was hiring a full time Advanced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Sheriff Nienhuis stated that he estimates a savings of $70,000 and 344% more mental service hours provided. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office has agreed to temporarily house federal detainees which will result in approximately $100,000 worth of revenue per year. Over the past 5 years, inmates have provided 629,973 hours of labor which he estimated to be worth over $6 million dollars.
The Sheriff also highlights some of the cost increases that will be seen in FY 2015-2016. Florida Retirement System Rates are set to increase 11% costing over $650,000. Worker’s Comp Rates are to increase $50,000. There will be a 5% increase in the cost of liability insurance coverage. Contracted courthouse security costs will be increasing 3%.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office total budgeted expenditures for FY 2015-2016 is $44,332,542. Budgeted contract revenues is $1,351,576. Subtracting the revenues from the total budgeted expenditures they get a total of $42,980,966 to be supported by the general fund. This is a 3.96% increase from the 2014-2015 fiscal year.
