Hernando County plans to purchase 25 generators (for $896 apiece) in order to maintain the functionality of traffic signals during prolonged power outages. The county states, “Due to vast power outage caused by Hurricane Irma, the Department of Public Works (DPW) Traffic division was unable to maintain functionality of many traffic signals throughout much of Hernando County. There are currently 85 operational traffic signals in Hernando County, with an additional two signals going into service later this fiscal year (Mariner/W Landover and US19/Toucan). DPW currently has three generators on hand to operate signals if power is not available. Although all signals have a UPS (uninterrupted power source) for backup due to power failure, it will only support the signal 4-6 hours depending on the quality of unit.”
