Home-court advantage is a major key during any basketball contest, especially when the game is a district contest. For the Nature Coast Sharks, under head coach Dave Pisarcik, that mantra proves to be incredibly valuable, as his teams almost never lose when playing in front of their home crowd.
And playing at home in the finale of a three-game homestretch, Pisarcik and his Sharks knew that they were going to be facing a major challenge, welcoming in an in-county rival, the Hernando Leopards, to the Shark Tank. Under the guise of head coach Jeff Laing, the Leopards have been one of the few teams in the local area to defeat NCT in regular-season competition.
And, this matchup between two FHSAA Class 6A, District 7 opponents became a knock-down, drag-out slobber knocker, with each team not wanting to make a crucial mistake and cost their team the game. And once the dust settled on the court, the host Sharks proved why their home-court advantage is their formula, easily defeating the visiting Leopards, 76-36. This game marked the fourth straight contest in which Nature Coast had the running clock initiated in the second half.
The contest was one-sided from the opening tipoff, with NCT (5-0) showing no mercy on the visiting Leopards. In recent years, NCT has shown dominance over every team in the county, and tonight was no different. The proof was in the outcome, which started from the Sharks’ starting 5 opening an early advantage, and their bench making sure that Hernando would have no opportunities to close the gap.
For each team, Nature Coast shot 15 of 35 from the field, 13 of 25 from 3-point range, and shot 7 of 11 from the free-throw line. Hernando, conversely, shot 10 of 21 from the field, 3 of 12 from three-point range, and 7 of 12 from the free-throw line. Turnovers were critical throughout the game, as Hernando and NCT combined for 30 changes of possession due to travelling violations, errant throws, or offensive fouls.
For the Sharks, senior guard Robert McAfee started the game with an unbelievable hot hand, with 5 of his first 6 shots from beyond the arc going through and helping NCT build an early 11-point advantage in the first quarter. He would finish the game with a team-high and game-high 24 points, shooting 3 of 6 from the field and going a perfect 3 of 3 from the charity stripe. When asked about his performance, he didn’t shy away from giving credit to his teammates. “Without my teammates helping me out, games like this aren’t possible. This was a team effort tonight.”
Aside from McAfee’s dominant performance, the Sharks scored points left and right to such a degree that only three individuals on their roster failed to register a point. These players were led by senior point guard Austin Rivera, who continued his history of being NCT’s next long-range sharpshooter, and sophomore small forward Orien Adams, who registered a double-double with a stat line of 10 points and 10 rebounds. He also added a steal and had a massive second-chance dunk that virtually sucked out any energy Hernando had left.
For Pisarcik, who has seen his fair share of dominant county wins and hard-fought battles in his nine-year tenure at the helm, he was very satisfied with the victory. “Every day, we as coaches preach the belief of a brotherhood with our guys. We can’t have true victories like we did tonight if our guys don’t commit to the cause. (McAfee) was dominant today, and as a leader of this team, we expect him to not only put in games like tonight, but to assist his teammates when necessary. If our guys play with this belief, then I believe that this team can go places.”
For the Sharks, they have a long week of rest and preparation for their next opponent. Next Friday night, the Sharks will travel up Sunshine Grove Road off Cortez Boulevard for a district matchup with the Central Bears. This matchup has major significance because of what transpired last season. Central pulled off what was described as a “massive upset” in capturing their first district crown in 20 years, but Nature Coast got the last laugh when they defeated them in the Sweet 16 on their court. Based on the history between these two programs, next Friday night is a must-watch event for high school basketball.
