When the Nature Coast Sharks and the Crystal River Pirates first met this season in Crystal River, Nature Coast saw a nine-point advantage slowly turn into a deficit, but still managed to defeat their opponents. So, when the teams matched up on Friday night, Nature Coast was attempting to continue their undefeated streak to start the season, while Crystal River was out for revenge.
And unlike the first matchup between these two 6A-7 powerhouses, this game was all Nature Coast from the beginning.
Continuing their tear to this season, Nature Coast won the opening tipoff, and after a close first quarter that saw the home team clinging onto a 15-12 advantage, the hot hands came racing out of the gate, and the Sharks cruised to a convincing 74-61 victory over the Pirates. With the win, Nature Coast improved its record entering their fourth annual Christmas tournament 8-0, but saw their impressive streak of consecutive victories with a running clock end at six games.
As a unit, Nature Coast was relatively moderate from the field, shooting 13 of 31 (42 percent) and 10 of 21 (48 percent) from the three-point line. On the other side, Crystal River shot 13 of 21 (62 percent) from the field and 8 of 18 from three-point range (44 percent). Both teams also shot regularly from the free-throw line, as Nature Coast went 19 of 22 (86 percent) and Crystal River 13 of 20 (65 percent).
For Nature Coast, their team has significantly revolved around the play of senior guard Robert McAfee. After the graduation of multiple key factors in last year’s Elite Eight team, head coach Dave Pisarcik believed that along with his current batch of varsity players, McAfee could be the final piece towards total domination. In this contest, while McAfee was inefficient from close range (0 for 5) and shot 3 of 8 from the three-point line, he went a perfect 10 for 10 from the free-throw line for a team-high 19 points. His closest competition on the team in points were Orien Adams and Jacob Caban, who both scored 13 points in the contest.
For Crystal River, their leading scorer was senior guard Cayden Gunter, who made up for his costly mistakes by scoring a game-high 21 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the field and making three of his five three-pointers attempted. He also added 2 points from the charity stripe as well. Also, Crystal River was aided by center Zachary O’Callaghan, who added 18 points of his own and made some clutch shots in the fourth quarter to help his team erase the massive deficit.
Yet despite the final score, this game could’ve gone in a multitude of directions. One major factor was the turnovers that plagued this contest. In the first matchup, Nature Coast and Crystal River combined for 30 turnovers. In their second matchup, the two teams increased that total to 43 turnovers. Most of the turnovers were the result of travelling violations, most inside the paint but others from the top of the key. A few errant passes were also involved, but travelling was the main factor.
When discussing the game, Pisarcik wasn’t about ready to pin the blame solely on officiating, saying that “While there were some calls that were a little sketchy, we had some mistakes that hurt us, and one must remember that a few calls here and there go the other way, and suddenly we’re in the hole needing to come back. But overall, I’m proud of our team for their resiliency and determination to succeed. We’re doing well right now, and we’re definitely going to see these guys again with the way they play.”
For Nature Coast, next up for their varsity boys is the fourth annual Nature Coast Christmas Tournament, which will feature 16 teams split in two brackets over the course of three days of basketball. Pisarcik designed the tournament this way to “give each team a guaranteed three games while promoting the benefits of good sportsmanship.” The tournament commences at 9:30 on Wednesday, December 27th and ends on December 29th.
