Some say that the sound of children’s voices, the ring of laughter and the loud clatter of dishes are stored away in the rafters and floors of this quaint old building. If you sit still, close your eyes and listen carefully you can actually hear the echo of these sounds from long ago.
Although the children’s voices have been quiet now for many years, once a month on a Tuesday night you can still hear the sounds of laughter and the clatter of dishes as friends and neighbors gather together to share a meal and fellowship as they have over the last 72+ years.
There are those that live in the area who treasure the building for the fond memories it holds because as school children they gathered there to have their lunch. There are
newcomers to the area that treasure the building out of respect for its beauty, architecture and age. There are also people who are unaware of the building’s history or purpose as it appears to them to be a mere curiosity. But everyone agrees that this beautiful old building is a relic of times gone by, and it has earned its status as a National Historical Site. Built during the Great Depression, it is a symbol of the American spirit.
Now home of the Spring Lake Community Center, the 72 year old building was designated a National Historical Site on October 20, 2009. Built in 1939 by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) from materials in the local Spring Lake area, the building originally served as a community center and cafeteria for the Spring Lake School. The school was closed in 1967 and used as a storage facility until 1999, when it was finally demolished. Many of the descendants of the founding families still live in the Spring Lake area today. The tradition their ancestors set forth 72 years ago are still observed.
On the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. you will find many of them gathered in the white stone building sharing a covered dish dinner, socializing and discussing matters that concern Hernando County and the Spring Lake Community. On all other Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m., members get together to play dominos, and simple card games. We have a wonderful time and you don’t have to be a member to enjoy game night.
