Many animals that enter animal services fortunately make their way to the Humane Society of the Nature Coast (http://humanerescue.org/), a nonprofit and no time limit organization founded in 1964. They also obtain animals by owner-surrender. When an animal is brought to the shelter there is a process. Some animals go to isolation. During isolation the dog or cat is given a medical overview and spayed or neutered. Those that are owner-surrendered are ready for adoption immediately.
Humane Society of the Nature Coast currently has ten (10) dogs and around sixty (60) cats available for adoption. “We might have a great dog, and it’s not good with other dogs. Its chances are limited. Young dogs, smaller dogs have a higher chance of being adopted,” explained Dina Athanassie, Executive Director for the Humane Society of the Nature Coast. In addition to the cats in their Cat Cottage, they have cats available for adoption at Pet Supermarket, PetSmart, and Petco.
With the limit of 12 kennel spaces, the adoptions are important to the shelter in order to take on other animals. There is a piece of property currently owned by Humane Society of the Nature Coast off of Weber Street in Brooksville, which is a promising future for this shelter. “That was a property purchased a couple of years ago, we hope to eventually use that land, but right now we are looking on to adding on to this property,” Athanassie said.
For those looking at adopting a dog, Athanassie advises to get the right dog for their lifestyle. “Many times people have good intentions but they pick the wrong breed,” Athanassie said. The shelter has a couple of gated areas for introducing the family and other currently owned pets to the desired adoptee. There is a meet and greet play time. Using that time before making a final commitment is important. “Personality is huge,” Athanassie stated.
There is one dog in particular that is just that, Buddy. Buddy is 1 to 2 year old Black Mouth Curr/ Labrador mix and a total love bug. He is just one that is looking for a home and a family to love and play with.
Then there is Lucy Blu, a Coonhound, Bluetick/Mix female around three years old. This beautiful girl was adopted from the Animal Services and then owner surrendered to the Humane Society of the Nature Coast, shortly thereafter adopted by a couple and now owner surrendered back to the shelter. This happens to be the case for Lucy Blu. Her curious nose is to the ground sniffing out curious scents and very active, meaning she is best fitted for outdoors and be in an active environment.
