The student body had a quarterly delegate meeting on December 8th, where delegates from each school come together and discuss issues at the schools. Ms. Drenth, Director of Food Services spoke to them on the topic of school lunches. “We the delegates informed Ms. Drenth on some of the complaints students have with the lunches,” stated Mr. Everett. She assured the students that she would “help fix all the fixable issues.” Ms. Drenth educated the students on the federal mandates she must follow with the lunches.
The students also came up with three committees, each dealing with a key issue identified by the student delegates. One committee will address curriculum and state assessments, another rezoning and transportation, while the third will take on the diminishing of arts and athletics programs. Mr. Everett explained that these committees will meet to find solutions to these problems.
Other topics discussed was the new calendar that shortens the summer for students and inappropriate ads or popups when students are on their iready. The delegates wish to inform the school board they are “not very pleased” with the new calendar.
Mr. Everett also discussed some positive news around the school system including a winter wonderland at Chocachatti, a winter concert at Moton and a winter dance at Parrott. At Westside, they are incorporating modern technology into their daily work while a new computer club began at Suncoast Elementary. Explorer just finished up a food drive in which they collected over 3000 food items that they distributed to those in need. Winding Waters spirit week was a great success. Fox Chapel is in the midst of forming a new brain bowl team. West Hernando is conducting grade competitions. Nature Coast Football made it to the elite 8, further than any Hernando County football team has ever gone. Weeki Wachee Band was given $1000 by Fox News to help pay for upcoming concerts. Finally, Hernando’s Future Farmers of America recently attended their annual convention.
