From School Board Student Representative, Clay Everett of HHS:
Student Board Representative Clay Everett presented his final report to the Hernando County School Board at the May 17, 2016 meeting. Everett stated the reports he brings to the HCSB come from the submissions of the local school delegates and he thanked them for the work they do in their individual schools. 
Upcoming events include: Winding Waters Elementary – Chorus and Band concert at Disney; Challenger K8 – 8th grade dance on 6/8/16; Final field trips are scheduled for Deltona Elementary (Safety Patrol) Spring Hill Elementary (5th Grade) and Moton Elementary; Westside Elementary – People Fair on 5/20; Suncoast Elementary – Teacher vs. Student kickball game on 5/20; Chocachatti Elementary – field day; Fox Chapel Middle School – award ceremonies all week; Weeki Wachee HS – band concert scheduled for 5/19
Everett noted that Powell Middle School’s Spring Carnival raised more than $1,000. Explorer K-8 was recognized for two achievements: the boys’ track team is the best in the county, and the cheerleading team won national awards. Nature Coast Technical High School’s annual “Brucy’s” event was attended by school board members. Central High School can be proud of the ROTC program, which tops all other ROTC programs in the country. Hernando High School showed their support for cancer research with their Relay for Life events.

The District History Fair Team competed in Tallahassee May 1-3, 2016 in State History Fair. The senior team “Harlem Renaissance” won second place and will compete at the National History Fair in Maryland on June 12-16, 2016. Among those competing were three sisters from Weeki Wachee High School: Jasmine, Hannah, and Madeline Jean-Marie. Those three students were able to take a photo with Dr. Romano at the school board meeting.
Dr. Romano also recognized the two instructional staff who have worked with all the students on the History Fair Team. District History Fair Director Lorisue Aleo stated Harlem Renaissance and William An, an 8th grade student from Powell Middle School were asked to present their work to historians in Orlando. This is the first time any Hernando County student has been asked to do this. Damien Clark, History and Geography teacher at Weeki Wachee High School, stated he was proud of the students, especially the Jean-Marie siblings, who have done “an excellent job.” Suzanne Miranda, History teacher at Springstead High School, expressed her pride at the students’ record of winning. She stated that other counties are asking for the secret that keeps Hernando County winning.
On May 3, the seventy-five High Impact Teachers in the district were recognized by the Department of Education for having “consistently high student achievement data” over the past three years. This was the first time the State has recognized this achievement. The teachers and their families were treated to a dinner with Dr. Romano and School Board Chair Matt Foreman.
Dr. Romano is inviting elementary students to participate in a reading challenge this summer. Students will be asked to read at least three hours a week and complete a reading log, then visit the school every two weeks to chart their progress and earn rewards. The program is called “Treasures and Tails” and runs from June 1 to July 14. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 will be given a flier on May 23.
