The Arc Nature Coast now has a new computer lab thanks to the Kiwanis of Spring Hill and Kiwanis Florida Foundation. Godfrey Eason of Kiwanis Spring Hill applied and was approved for a matching grant from the Kiwanis Florida Foundation. Each of the two organizations contributed $5,000.00 for the purchase of computer equipment. They now have a state of the art media room, complete with 12 computer stations, 3 lap tops, an integrated printer and a large screen computer with a wireless keyboard. Walter Butler, owner of Computer Butler worked diligently to locate and install the most up to date equipment possible. Mr. Eason is also working to acquire a grant for an additional 20 laptops.
The computer lab will be primarily utilized for training purposes. The Arc serves intellectually and developmentally challenged individuals in a number of capacities. One of their essential functions is to train individuals to become more independent and develop skills that can help them become an active member of the community through volunteering or entering the workforce. The computer lab will be an integral part of this as they are now working to develop a computer curriculum for their clients that will give them basic computer literacy and entry level job skills. One goal is to partner with businesses for training as well as developing the curriculum in order to incorporate skills that are in demand.
The curriculum will be presented through a 6 month training program, 2 to 4 hours per day that would cover record/book keeping, word processing, spreadsheets, powerpoint and internet basics. On an individual basis, more in depth training could be done. Mr. Eason would like to see each person feel confident in their accomplishments no matter what their skill level.
Program Director Connie Calub says that clients have a great enthusiasm and desire to work. They boost morale in the workplace and serve important roles in many local businesses including the Walmart Distribution Center, Micro-Matic, Carrabas, Alumi-Guard, Accuform Signs, Publix, Marshalls and Walgreens. In many cases, The Arc client works the same job as any other employee at the business. Nancy Stubbs, Development Director, remarks that The Arc clients are incredibly capable and intelligent despite their disabilities.
When hired by a local business, a job coach often works alongside them to ensure success. Eventually the job coach will only need to check in once in a while. With the support of local businesses and the technology community, the new computer lab will give The Arc clients essential computer skills and greater work opportunities.
