Special Olympics Hernando promotes Rhonda Coleman to County Director.
Thursday, June 30, 2016 marked a great beginning for a very special person that dedicates her time and passion to many children and parents in Hernando County.
“We are incredibly excited to see strong county support and proud of the way our program over the last year has grown, changed, evolved under our county director Rhonda Coleman. We are very excited about what’s to come for Special Olympics Florida for Hernando County,” said Andrew Ingram, Regional Director SW.
Rhonda Coleman started just as an interim last spring and has dedicated herself throughout the year to spreading awareness that has helped so many special needs children and adults. Coleman will not only be acting as the Hernando County Director but for Citrus County as well.
“I am looking to partnering with the schools, getting our program really under fire with the different high schools, middle school and even elementary schools. We are hoping to meet several of the elementary teachers and get our young athlete program started,” said Coleman.
Hernando County has thousands of children and adults that have intellectual and developmental disabilities. Special Olympics provides a year-round sports training and competition program and it helps those with disabilities be a part of a community and a family. Programs like these build friendships, esteem and strength.
“Special Olympics is about inclusion. When we start promoting that inclusion at a very young age, we also promote the sportsmanship and leadership. We cross the barriers, we start that at a young age, and we are setting up for success. I am really looking forward to partnering with the schools and getting those programs on the way,” Coleman stated.
