The third Politics in the Park event is set for July 14th. Politics in the Park is put on every two years by the Hernando County Chamber of Commerce so voters can learn more about the candidates running for election to state, local and national positions. By law, all candidates are invited to participate.
Tyler Stapleton, an event organizer explained that there will be three components to the event. The first component is a political fair or meet and greet. Throughout the entire event, citizens will be able to speak with the candidates about the issues that matter to them.
The second component is a speaking portion where candidates are given 3 minutes to speak. Stapleton explained that it is not a Q&A session, but some candidates occasionally choose to do that. The speaking portion will be taped by the government broadcasting channel.
The third component is a straw poll, which will be run by Shirley Anderson, Supervisor of Elections. At the end of the night, the results will be tallied. The straw poll does not have any impact on the actual election. Referendum will appear on the straw poll ballot such as the sales tax initiative.
Stapleton said that there has been very good turnout for the Politics in the park event in the past. The event is geared toward local candidates since they are more likely to attend.
The Local Kiwanis club will be running a food fundraiser offering popcorn, hamburgers, hot dogs and soda. Although the event is not providing activities geared toward children, Stapleton explained that it can be a family affair and encourages parents to get their children involved in the political process. “I certainly would encourage kids to come,” stated Stapleton.
