Theatrical Makeup and Hair Workshop
There are kids that dream of being an actor or actress on stage. Learning lines and roles are challenging, however learning the essentials of stage makeup is just as important.
Ramaad Morris has been around musical theater acting all his life. Now he teaches workshops and performs live on stage at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Club Villain.
“I started in musical theatre when I was nine years old, my mom put me in. My mom passed away the same year… She sang at Jazz clubs, nightclubs and from that point I watched her perform and it starstruck me and ever since then I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do. I really wanted to follow her footsteps,” Ramaad said.
Theatrical Makeup is different from over the counter makeup. Ramaad explained that with the bright florescent lighting used in stage lighting, the make-up needs to be bolder.
“Theatrical makeup can help you in a lot of different settings. For stage makeup works across the board, whether you are going out on the town or on stage, you definitely want to have something a little bit more bold, if you don’t you will lose all your features,” Morris said.
Learning contouring and highlighting that shape and how to define your face at a young age helps those growing into stage performers.
“Your face changes. You definitely want to start at a young age, that way once you grow and your face does start to change, you will change with it. You will know how to change those facial features.”
This workshop wasn’t only for those under 16 but also for mothers that have their children involved with dance and theatre.
“My son has been in multiple shows I am learning the stage make-up for him, because I am the one that usually puts it on,” said Renee Guarino.
Renee Guarino, along with Cindy Smith and Suzette Piepras took this workshop in order to help their kids by learning the techniques and tips of theatrical make-up to help their children bring more into their performance and increase their confidence.
Each student received a Mehron Mini-Pro Student Makeup Kit and Morris explained everything from how to make your nose thinner to highlighting those cheekbones for stage appearance. When the students got frustrated or didn’t quite understand a certain angle or color, Morris was there to reassure their application technique.
Understanding theatrical makeup techniques is a big part of boosting confidence and ultimately improves performance. To learn at an early age can help students express their role vibrantly.
“I love being on stage, that is my all-time safe haven that’s where I can release every worry I ever have,” Morris said.
