Every year at this time, Wider Horizons School students in grades 6-12 visit area nursing homes to sing Christmas Carols. This year, their singing made an impact many of the students will never forget.
School Director, Julie T. Maglio, explained that the students got back on the bus after singing their repertoire of Christmas Carols and a caregiver came out to the bus in tears stating, “ ‘There were many Alzheimers patients in that group and they hadn’t spoken in a long time. While you were singing, they joined in. They knew all the words, they sang all the songs. And then they started to talk amongst themselves.’ ”
A sixth grade student named Hanna said, “It made me happy to know that we were bringing joy and nice memories to them this Christmas.”
In the photo above: In addition to the nursing home visits, all grade levels at WHS (preschool – grade 12) and often past graduates sing Christmas Carols for parents and the community on the last day of school before winter break.
