Messages of love and appreciation quickly flew upon signs around Brooksville, as soon as word got out that the community had lost legendary Coach Ernie Chatman. Both businesses and community venues honored Chatman in this heartfelt way.

His memorial service on Friday packed the parking lot of Hernando High School with some having to find a spot along the street. The memorial service took place in the gymnasium with local Pastors Edd Denton, Doug Zipperer and Joe Sims leading prayers and blessings.

Bret Chatman, Ernie’s son, delivered a moving eulogy that received a standing ovation. He imagined his father taking time on his last day, Sunday to appreciate all his triumphs, from running a marathon in every state to all the teams in many different sports that he helped to develop. Coach Chatman lead teams that won at all levels of high school sports. On his last day Bret wondered if Coach Chatman took time to remember the many young people who he helped to achieve their best.

Ernie’s runnings shoes and straw hat were in a place of honor at his memorial. His favorite quote from Steve Prefontaine “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift” was repeated and graced the program cover.

On Sunday morning a run was held in Chatman’s honor. Runners and walkers could be spotted around town wearing t-shirts with a photo of Ernie Chatman. He will surely live on in the hearts of many.
