Becky Jack’s Food Shack is a restaurant that is often mentioned by locals as a place you must try. It is on Cortez Boulevard past Weeki Wachee Springs State Park on the way to Bayport.
The restaurant is on the south side of the road and is easily spotted because of their brightly colored sign and pink and yellow car with a surfboard on top and Becky Jack’s painted on the side.
We tried several dishes at Becky Jack’s. The Crunchy Fish platter which is one of the their signature dishes is breaded with cornflakes and almonds.
The platter comes with two sides, so we ordered french fries, and mac and cheese.
The mac and cheese had a kick. Becky Jack’s is also known for their burgers, so we tried a western burger.
The burger was good sized and covered with barbecue sauce, onion rings, pulled pork, and bacon.
It came on a kaiser roll. The Fish Tacos had crunchy fish with flour tortillas, cheese, salsa, lettuce, pickled jalapenos, and tartar sauce. All the dishes were excellent and good sized portions.
We also tried a couple of soups. The New England clam chowder had a lemon tang. It was thick and creamy and loaded with fish, clams and potatoes.
The seafood gumbo had a little kick to it. It had okra, seafood, rice, and more.
We also ordered a Tampa Bay Brewing Company Elephant Foot IPA from the list of craft brews that are available at Becky Jack’s along with domestic and imported beers. The Elephant Foot IPA is a mild light IPA.
The restaurant has been serving the area for a long time.
In 2009, husband and wife Joe Foster and Kim Curtis took over the restaurant from Becky De La Rosa, who had operated the restaurant for over 30 years previously. Kim passed away on May 28, 2015.
Many were saddened by her passing and the loss of her bright personality.
The inside dining area is midsized, it seats around 25 people. There is plenty of seating outside, which will see more use in the fall and winter.
Becky Jack’s is a destination for food lovers who seek old Florida seafood shacks where the food is great.
It is popular with the locals as well as out of towners who have heard or read about Becky Jack’s.
