In Brooksville, the red light cameras came down recently. This will make the opponents of the red light camera breath a little easier, since before the red light cameras, radar guns and other equipment was removed the only obstacle to the return of red light cameras was a vote of the Brooksville City Council. Now, with the removal of the equipment, to reinstitute red light cameras would require installing all the equipment again.
The contract with Sensys to provide red light cameras ended October 31, 2016 and Sensys stopped issuing tickets on that date. The did not turn off the radar on the signs. In previous instances red light camera companies had continued to detect red light violations and then approached the municipality with the potential revenue that they were foregoing.
The contract with Sensys stated the the contract expired three years after the last camera was “installed and operational.” The last camera was installed three years prior to December 31, 2015. Sensys threatened to sue the City of Brooksville, because they had a 16th camera that had gone through the permitting process. Sensys said that therefore the camera contract should expire April of 2017. The City of Brooksville settled with Sensys and signed a contract which expired October 31, 2016.
