Tamara and Jim Ferguson opened their restaurant in January of 2016 off of 41 in Brooksville. The sunny, brightly colored exterior caught my eye and I decided to give the place a try. Tamara, the cook, is originally from Jamaica. She begins preparing her family recipes early each morning, so there is time for the ingredients and flavors to simmer and meld together before their lunchtime crowd.

They serve authentic Jamaican cuisine. Unusual items such as goat and oxtail are offered up in stews and curries. They do have more familiar items like jerk or curry chicken as well as pan fried or stuffed tilapia. There are also a variety of sandwiches. Island breeze offers numerous bottled caribbean beverages as well as freshly made sorrel punch and tamarind tea. If you are unfamiliar with sorrel punch, it is a drink made from the hibiscus plant and usually has rum in it. Island breeze leaves out the rum. I tried the tamarind tea which was sweet and refreshing.

I ventured to try the goat curry, which turned out to be an excellent choice. Not being familiar with Jamaican fare, I didn’t realize that the goat curry is prepared bone in. If you do try the goat, beware of small bone fragments.

The entrees are served with a choice of two sides. I chose the steamed cabbage and plantains. Both were very good.

You order your food upon entering and they bring it to you in take out boxes. The portions are large so you will probably need the box.

The prices are very reasonable.
