BROOKSVILLE- At the Hernando County Fairgrounds, the Fourth Annual Candy Cane Acres began on November 27th and runs through December 17th. Alicia Stanina along with her sister and friends were debating which holiday event to take their kids to last weekend. “This is something simple for the kids,” Stanina said. With the kids gathered around Santa, smiles and laughter ensured them this was the best event for them to attend.
“We had discussed having a drive thru type event, but it was not economical,” explained Shari Klimas, Hernando County Fair Board of Directors President said. Klimas explained that they originally got the lights from a couple that had retired their elaborate Christmas display. “The Newmans sold us all their lights and displays and every year we add a little bit more to it,” Klimas said.
Beginning on Black Friday, the event started off slow. However, as the weekend approaches the busier Candy Cane Acres gets. “I couldn’t come out of the kitchen, because we were trying to keep up with the hot chocolate,” Klimas giggled.
Even though she spent most of the night helping out in Mrs. Claus’ kitchen, Klimas stated, “Seeing the kid’s smile, that’s the best part of the whole thing.”
Candy Cane Acres continues until December 17th and is open from 6:30pm to 9:30pm on Friday and Saturday evenings.
