Hernando County Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of programs for the younger generation as well as the young at heart. Baton is one of the programs that are offered. Diane Sorvillo, a two time national champion twirler and worldwide instructor has been with the recreation department for fifteen years.
Beginners learn the basic twirls like figure eights to horizontals. The advanced level twirlers work with more difficult twirling routines and add dance moves as well as gymnastics.
“It’s like a building block, you take your basic flip and you add a flip catch left, there is a reason for every trick that you learn to progress from,” Diane Sorvillo said.
Classes are for those ages four years old and older, either as a beginner or advanced level. Competition is also offered, however that is optional.
Not only is this a great activity for kids, it also teaches hand-eye coordination. “It’s good exercise for them; we do a lot of rhythm (routines),” Sorvillo said.
