As we become increasingly concerned with land and energy use, residents in Florida are seeking out new ways to solve turf and landscaping problems.
Turfgrass is not always the best planting for some sites. It needs mowing, it needs water, and it needs feeding; some types do not like shade and most turfgrass takes a lot of work and water to keep it looking good.
The use of low-maintenance ground covers provides us with many practical and beautiful alternatives to nonfunctional/under-performing turf along with lots of ornamental ground covers with the added bonus that they require virtually no watering.
Fortunately, there are many lawn alternatives that require less work and less water, and some do not need fertilizer. A program will be presented by Lilly Browning on Friday, July 14 at 10 a.m. at the Chinsegut Conservation Center in Brooksville. Browning is the Hernando County Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program Coordinator and she invites you to think outside the green rectangle and create a lawn that fits the needs of your yard.
Learn how to escape traditional notions of a rolling green lawn-scape and explore the possibilities of alternative groundcovers. The program will help owners to choose a ground cover well-suited to your particular site. Some popular groundcover varieties include Asiatic jasmine, beach sunflower, and liriope.
