Hernando Sun sat down with Dr. Jessica Allen, a chiropractor starting a practice here in Hernando County that provides chiropractic services supported by soft tissue massage in the patient’s own home. She told us about her experiences as a chiropractor and what drove her to establish such a unique practice.
“When I was in typical practice, I heard every day my patients’ challenges in making it to the office within business hours, then having to wait ‘forever’ to see me, and then their appointment was only five minutes because of how many other people I had waiting. It felt like a rat race to me, and not the reason I became a doctor.”
She was also under pressure to produce a certain amount per patient- whether or not the patient actually needed the service given. Dr. Allen quickly grew frustrated with this environment where the main focus was on making money, not healing.
She created a practice that emphasizes healing through soft tissue massage and chiropractic adjustment. She says that the patient’s adjustment is often more successful and complete following massage. She explains, “The body undergoes structural correction with regular chiropractic care, your muscles and soft tissues need to adapt to it. With the correct soft tissue techniques in adequate amounts, the body is able to adapt thoroughly and efficiently to the structural correction, reducing or eliminating the inconvenience of soreness or other symptoms that may arise from a typical chiropractic visit.” She also takes the time to set up and discuss supplement plans for her patients.
According to Dr. Allen this style of practice is viable as it reduces her overhead and gives her the flexibility she needs. “I tried different types of business structures over the years and found about three years ago doing house calls made so much sense. The patient got the care they deserved, and I had fewer bills to pay, it’s a no brainer.”
Without the restrictions of an office, she has had the opportunity to treat Minnesota Viking players, professional golfers, large corporate offices, and business elite in Dallas, TX and Asheville, NC. She has provided in home or group home care to children and adults managing Austism, Cerebral Palsy, Torrette’s Syndrome, Down’s Syndrome, and various other conditions.
“I never expect an overnight miracle,” she admits. “But my care generally results in improved sleep patterns, less behavior extremes, more balanced appetites, and over time we see things like increased balance, attention span, and less episodic illnesses like colds, flus, etc. And, the patients love it…I am very fortunate to be their doctor that never hurts them, takes time to ensure everyone is comfortable, and really pour my heart into their progress.”
