Consignment shopping extravaganza at the fairgrounds
Cindy McWilliams, owner of Happy Happy Hippos, along with her mom started a consignment venue in Tampa but outgrew that space and moved to the Hernando County Fairgrounds in Brooksville back in 2009.
“It was just a way to get rid of our own stuff, and it kind of evolved over the years,” Cindy said. Now sole owner of Happy Happy Hippos, Cindy organizes consignment sales at the fairgrounds now twice a year: in the Fall before the start of school and in the Spring. Beginning with strictly children’s consignment, Cindy expanded this year to hold adult consignment sales as well.
“A lot of people asked us if (we) could do this for adults, so we started the adult version this Spring,” Cindy said.
Both the adult and children consignment events are for those that wish to buy at affordable prices, and those that wish to sell unwanted items stacked up in their closets.
On August 5th, 6th and 7th the indoor facility at the fairgrounds was filled with a huge variety of items from books to wedding dresses to framed art and dressers. Most importantly the prices were reasonable.
Stephanie Thomas has been friends with Cindy for a long time and partnered with Happy Happy Hippos. “We love it! I love meeting all the people and hearing the stories. We have people coming from Gainesville and Orlando. It’s huge to have that outreach and traffic in those areas,” Stephanie said.
Happy Happy Hippos sale is a huge success within the community as several charities consign during the event for fundraising. “They use us to raise money as well,” Cindy said.
