(Spring Hill, FL) at approximately 12:55p.m. Hernando County Fire Rescue (HCFR) was notified that a drilling company had hit a gas line in the area of Elgin Boulevard and Landover Blvd.
Upon arrival HCFR found a heavy gas smell in the area. No explosions or fire as result of the breach in the line. As a precaution, fire crews shut down Elgin Boulevard and deployed fire hoses in the event of an ignition. The HCFR Hazardous Materials Team responded to assist. A safety perimeter was established which then necessitated the evacuation of four homes until the gas lines can be secured. Upon contact with representatives of the gas company, AmeriGas, they have confirmed it was a propane distribution line that was hit. AmeriGas crews are currently working on securing and repairing the damaged gas line. There have been no reports of injuries to construction crews, citizens of first responders.
HCFR responded to the scene with 2 fire engines, 2 rescues, 2 battalion chiefs and 1 Hazardous Materials Unit.
HCFR is asking that travelers avoid the area till the situation mitigated and deemed safe. Updates on roadway status will be delivered via HCFR Social Media.
