We recently headed to Mary’s Fish Camp to see what it offered. We used google maps navigation to find our way. The navigation said to turn from Cortez Boulevard on Shoal Line Boulevard and then to turn on Cofer Road. These are incorrect directions that would have led us to a location directly across the river from Mary’s Fish Camp.
Apparently, a number of people rely on google maps navigation to get to Mary’s Fish Camp and end up in the wrong place. It is so common, the property owners put up signs indicating that the road is private and does not go to Mary’s Fish Camp.
To actually make it to Mary’s Fish Camp requires staying on Cortez Boulevard until you reach Mary’s Fish Camp Road. If you followed google maps directions you would have to retrace your steps back to Cortez Boulevard and continue a couple of thousand feet further on Cortez Boulevard to arrive on the road.
Google maps has a feature where you report bad directions from the map. You report where their directions went wrong and what they would need to change to have correct directions. It took exactly a month for google maps to correct the issue from the time it was reported.
Taking advantage of volunteers to look through large amounts of data is known as crowdsourcing. Google uses crowdsourcing to improve their maps.
There have been a number times that news organizations crowdsourced large amounts of data to identify things of interest. The news releases the documents and asks the public to look through them.
