On January 23, 2015, at approximately 2:35 a.m., the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office received a teletype message from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office regarding a shooting that had occurred in Citrus County. The teletype message requested that Hernando County deputies attempt to locate an individual that may have knowledge of and/or been involved in the
shooting.
At approximately 2:41 a.m., Hernando County deputies encountered the individual in a white SUV type vehicle in the 7-11 parking lot at Berkeley Manor Boulevard and Commercial Way. As deputies were approaching the white SUV, a shot was fired from within the vehicle. In response to the shot fired from within the vehicle, one deputy returned fire. Dispatchers were advised at 2:42 a.m. that “shots were fired.”
A white male was transported to a local hospital by Hernando County Fire Rescue from a self- inflicted gunshot wound. He later died at the hospital.
Initial reports indicate that the male was not struck by any of the deputy’s rounds. In an abundance of caution, Sheriff Al Nienhuis has called in FDLE to conduct the usual officer involved shooting investigation.
UPDATE:
The male who was inside the vehicle and is now deceased has been identified as Jeffrey Michael Lloyd W/M DOB/05-04-1989. The last address of record for Lloyd is in St. Cloud,
Florida.
The Hernando County deputy that fired his weapon during this incident is Deputy Wayne Peterson, age 34. Peterson has been employed with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office
since November of 2004. As per standard protocol, the incident is under review by HCSO Internal Affairs and Deputy Peterson has been placed on paid administrative leave.
