Fakahatchee Grass, Tripsacum dactyloides, is a wonderful native grass that will complement any landscape. It is a Florida native and will grow 4 to 6 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide, so give it some room to grow. It does well in dry to partially wet soil, but can stand to be in water for lengths of time (perfect for a rain garden.) It likes a sunny to partially sunny location. It has a medium salt tolerance. This bunch grass provides larval food for the Byssus Skipper butterfly. After mine was planted for 2 years or so, it started drooping no matter how much rain we got. I gave it a good haircut during the spring (to about 2 feet tall) and the new growth bounced back, happy and thriving.
