Guardians of the Flame
In 1981 the first torch run began in Wichita, Kansas which lead to over 35 countries participating in this worldwide event to help raise awareness for Special Olympics. In 2014 the “Flame of Hope” was lit up in Hernando County.
“Our Law enforcement are the guardians of the flame,” said Rhonda Lunsford Coleman, County Director for Hernando. “To see our athletes out here with law enforcement supporting this event, you are going to [be moved] beyond words.”
There is something about bringing two great organizations together in Hernando County, the Sheriff’s department and Special Olympics in order to unify for one purpose: awareness.
“I think it’s a great organization (Special Olympics), I often attend their events and it’s always a great time. The athletes are great people. It’s one of those things that help make a hometown community,” said Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis.
Just shy of 3 miles… the torch run was lit at Tom Varn Park and looped around the Courthouse and headed down hill back to Tom Varn Park. Each person participating in this event knew they were doing something great.
For just a couple of hours, officers set aside the demands of being in law enforcement and took the opportunity to walk or run side by side with a Special Olympics athlete. By doing this they are able see the strength, determination and individualism of these Special Olympics athletes and understand why being an athlete is so important to them.
“We get to show support for them and all their hard work and dedication to becoming an athlete and also it is a good community event,” Deputy Luke Phelan said.
As the torch flame slowly faded, law enforcement officers, deputies, emergency responders and Special Olympic athletes gathered together to share in the achievement of finishing the run.
“I am overloaded with emotions, this is awesome for me. We are looking forward to next year,” said Rhonda Coleman.
