Former NCT back Matt Breida scores 1st NFL touchdown
From scoring touchdowns at Nature Coast Technical to Georgia Southern and now doing it in the National Football League, Matt Breida has now done it at the highest level.
The former Sharks’ star running back scored his first NFL touchdown in the San Francisco 49ers’ 33-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday afternoon. Breida caught a 21-yard pass from 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard in the third quarter with 4:36 remaining, marking the former NCT back’s first of what is hopefully many more touchdowns to come.
Breida currently sits second on the depth chart for the 49ers behind starter Carlos Hyde. Breida’s stats through eight games played for San Francisco are 42 carries for 163 yards rushing and the versatile back has also caught 14 passes for a total of 103 yards. The former Hernando County prep football star will be back in action when the 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. at Levi’s Stadium.
Springstead’s Alexis Thompson selected for All Star game
It was a memorable season for Springstead’s Alexis Thompson and the senior continues to add accolades to her belt even with the regular season concluded.
The outside hitter has been selected to play in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association’s (FACA) All Star Game and the contest will take place in Lakeland on the dates of Nov. 18th and 19th. Thompson was an FACA All District selection after a stellar senior campaign for the 16-6 Eagles.
Thompson finished off the 2017 season with a team-high 229 kills and added 88 digs. The senior also had 63 blocks and 19 assists to her season totals.
The FHSAA Football Playoff Announcement Show on Nov. 5
It’ll be must watch television for many prep football coaches and players around the state of Florida this Sunday when the Florida High School Athletic Association hosts the ‘FHSAA Football Playoff Announcement Show’, which will air at 11 a.m. on
nfhsnetwork.com.
The show will reveal which teams around the state of Florida have qualified for the FHSAA postseason, which changed its system of how programs qualify for the playoffs. In past years, teams took aim at winning the district or finishing as a runner-up, with either spot earning a berth in the postseason. The FHSAA changed it after the 2016 season to a points based system, in which teams would either have to win their district outright or accumulate enough points based on strength of schedule.
Three Hernando County teams will be watching the Announcement Show very closely, as Hernando, Nature Coast Technical and Springstead are all in the running to reach the postseason in their respective classifications. If Hernando can defeat Lecanto Friday night, it will create a 3-way tie in Class 5A, District 7 with Inverness Citrus and Nature Coast. All three teams will have an identical district mark of 5-1.
