After a solid start to his big-league career playing third base for the San Francisco Giants, the rookie Christian Arroyo has had a tough go of it in May, hitting .180 with a home run and 10 runs batted in over 89 at-bats.
This past week, Arroyo went 1-for-4 with a RBI double off St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright in the May 21 game, his fourth two-bagger of the season. That capped off a good three-game series versus the Cardinals, in which Arroyo went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs in the first tilt.
In Game 2, Arroyo hit a two-run double to break a scoreless tie in the 13th inning of a 3-1 win. It was the conclusion of an epic 12-pitch at-bat.
Over the next five days after leaving St. Louis, however, Arroyo went a combined 0-for-19, though he did have a RBI on a fielder’s choice in Wednesday’s contest against the Chicago Cubs. He sat out games on Saturday and Sunday against the Atlanta Braves.
For the season, Arroyo is hitting .186 with three homers, nine runs scored and 14 RBI.
Bronson Arroyo made two starts this last week for the Cincinnati Reds, first on May 21 in a 6-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies. The 40-year-old went 5 1/3 innings, giving up nine hits and six runs while walking two and striking out four.
On Saturday, Arroyo got a no-decision in a 4-3 loss at Philadelphia. He threw five innings against the Phillies, permitting three earned runs on five hits and a walk, fanning four batters.
So far in his comeback season after missing the past two due to injury, Arroyo is 3-4 with a 6.62 earned run average over 10 starts.
