The United Way’s annual kickball tournament, called “KICK Start to early literacy,” proves once again that the popular schoolyard sport is a great way to combine competition and fun for a community cause.
The annual tourney raises money to fund United Way of Hernando County’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library program, which supplies each Hernando child enrolled with a free book every month until the age of five.
“This year’s event was a huge success and had a great turnout of friends, families, and community members who came on out that day to support the teams. We are still in the process of totaling up the amount raised but the participation throughout the day was more than we could have hoped for,” remarked Dominique Holmes, Hernando County United Way Community Outreach Director.
“We had a total of 16 teams participate and each team consisted of 10 members. We had representation from the Chamber Young Professionals, Carter, Clendenin, & Foreman, Oak Hill Hospital, Patriot Lending Services, SunTrust Bank, Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative, 2 teams from Monster Transmission & Performance, and 8 teams from Publix,” she explained.
The tournament’s big winner was the “WRECing Crew,” representing Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative. They proudly took home the ‘Ultimate Kickball Trophy.’
During the event, books were collected to stock the Little Free Library that United Way installed at Anderson Snow Park. This free book exchange stand is located at the playground and can be found stocked with books all year long.
