The name Michael S. Williams was engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC over the weekend. Williams formerly served as a police officer for the city of Brooksville and was a graduate of Hernando High School. He also served as the liaison to the Crimestoppers Board while at the Brooksville Police Department.
Williams had taken a position as a Taylor County Sheriff’s deputy in May 2015. He unfortunately lost his life during an early morning shift on October 31, 2016, when he collided into the back of a logging truck, unable to see the logs that stuck out several feet behind the truck.
His mother Karen, family and friends joined the families of 394 other fallen officers who were honored. There was a candlelight vigil on the National Mall on Saturday and a memorial service took place at the capitol on Monday.
The event was part of National Police Week. President Donald Trump delivered an address during the memorial service on Monday stating in part, “It’s time for a grateful nation to join hands with our police and with our sheriffs to build the bridges of cooperation and trust and to make our streets safer for every man, woman and child in America… As we seek this better and brighter future we do so in the memory of those brave and gentle souls who were stolen from this world when they had so much left to share and give. Not only to us but to their incredible families.”
Scott was one of 6 officers in the state of Florida who fell in the line of duty in 2016.
