The Dant Clayton Corporation out of Louisville, KY was chosen to provide a prefab press box, including 42″ guardrail, intermediate steps with hand rails; enclosed pressbox understructure; steel angle frame understructure; slanted front tinted windows; (2) HVAC units; additional uplift roof strapping per Florida code.
School Board Member Gus Guadagnino was concerned about why the school district was not choosing to use a local builder to construct the new press box at Hernando High School.
Erik van de Boogaard Dir. Of Facilities explained that the press box was originally built in the 60’s or 70’s and they don’t have “as built drawings of that particular structure.” He explained that they’ve had a basic structural review several times. Boogaard stated that the structure does not meet code. He emphasized the need for a lightweight structure which the chosen company could provide.
“These types of companies build these structures all over the United States, they would build it at their site. They would ship it here. It would be craned up in a day.”
He also stated that the structure would be ready to go two days after they deliver it.
Gus Guadagnino asked if they considered any local contractors that buy and assemble metal frame structures.
Boogaard stated that they had not. They discussed with their architects and engineers the prefab structures.
The pressbox was approved 3-1 with Chairman Matt Foreman absent and Guadagnino voting against it.
The press box is quoted to cost $104,133.00 and will be paid out of the 10 Year Sales Tax Maintenance account. As of 6/23/16, expenditures in this account is at $990,151.04. The remaining balance after the present request is $2,047,088.00.
