When you examine the breeds that are currently in the Hernando County animal shelter, many are pitbulls. According to Emily Weiss, Vice President of Research and Development for the ASPCA, the American Pit Bull is number 1 on the list of the top ten most common breeds in shelters throughout the US:
- American Pit Bull Terrier
- Labrador Retriever
- German Shepherd
- Dachshund
- Jack Russell Terrier
- Chihuahua
- Boxer
- Beagle
- American Bulldog
- American Staffordshire Terrier
The animal services nightly report on 11/01/2015, the recorded number of dogs sheltered was fifty-two (52). Among them are 25 dogs of a Pitbull breed mix.
Pitbull Gear and Pitbull Awareness Group hosted a Pitbull awareness event at the Hernando County Fairgrounds on October 24, 2015. “We were just tired of seeing negative images about the breed (Pitbull),” event organizer, Connie Hudson stated.
Connie along with her husband Allen, created a web-based business that started as a hobby but quickly turned into a successful business. “We want to be involved in anything and everything that can be positive for this breed,” Hudson explained. “The Pitbull breed is over bred. The over breeding is a big problem,” Hudson said. “The only thing to me a Pitbull is guilty of, is their strength. We need to educate people, you should judge them on their own merit. They are people dogs, loyal dogs.”
