Did you know that a mature tree produces enough oxygen in one day for four people? There is a reason why time spent among the trees makes us feel good. Trees clean and freshen the air we breathe. They reduce carbon dioxide and remove many pollutants. When you consider the life span of a tree, it is a real bargain. What else can you plant in your landscape that provides years of beauty, helps cool your house in summer, provides habitat for wildlife, and cover for shade-loving plants? In the winter trees offer shelter to more tender plants from frost. Trees reduce the impact of a heavy rain to allow the soil beneath them time to absorb water and reduce run-off. They can screen out less attractive views and define space while softening the harsh, straight lines of buildings. They improve property values.
While winter is the optimum time to plant trees in Florida, with proper care, they can be successfully added to your landscape in summer. Do some research. Find the right tree for the location where it will be planted. What is your soil type? Is the soil well drained, or does it retain water? Is the location near power lines? Will the roots be confined by driveways or sidewalks? Once you decide on a specific tree, and determine how far away from your house it should be placed. Plant it at the proper depth, anchor it by driving stakes through the root ball into the subsoil, and irrigate only if the soil is dry and no rain is forecast for that day.
