Repurposing Junk: One’s trash is another’s treasure
The Junk Company is a new business here in Brooksville, which started four months ago.
Jennifer Geddie owner of The Marauder Salvage Co in Hudson and Kim Davis, owner Country Rustic Décor in Brooksville formed the Junk Co. The two inspired business partners love redefining items found through salvage sales.
Geddie explained that since Hernando County doesn’t have a lot of “junk sales,” they put together the Junk Co. Street Market event where vendors can come and sell their junk.
“I love junk,” Jennifer Geddie said.
How did she start this love of junk? After an injury that ended her retail management job, she had to find something that occupied her time; she began this new salvage adventure which brought her creative inspiration to a new level. For the past five years, her hobby has grown. “It grows everyday… we find new stuff we like to do and expand.”
Not only does Jennifer have the love of seeking salvage items, but her husband Brad is also keen on finding unique and distinctive pieces. “I look for the cool factor,” Brad Geddie said.
Treasure hunting for objects from tin shingles to massive doors from an old church is a dream for any DIY hobbyist. However, the main objective is to think outside the box and repurpose the object in a creative and useful way.
“A lot of this stuff like this would end up in scrapyard, melted down, and crushed up. People don’t know that it’s worth something,” Brad said. “Things like this (antique fan) will never be made again.”
“Honestly, probably 90% of the stuff we sell is not used for the intended purpose that it was made for,” Brad said.
One item in their workshop is a beautiful old metal library catalog cabinet. Back in the day when you visited the library it wasn’t type in a keyword on the computer it was the Dewey Decimal System. A previous larger cabinet the Geddie’s had is actually being used for shoes.
“I like saving that stuff, they will never produce these kind of things again, because there is no necessity for them,” Brad said.
The team has other plans in addition to repurposing junk. “We absolutely want to do classes and teach people how to paint, and different techniques,” Jennifer Geddie said. “We plan to open a retail store, kind of farm house, shabby industrial mix.”
