Respite Care is available for those with early stage Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or other types of senile dementia in Citrus and Hernando County. Often taking care of a loved one with a memory loss illness is extremely demanding. Respite care offers a break for the caretaker and beneficial social interaction for the affected individual. The program is available through Catholic Charities and serves anyone in need.

The program provides stimulating activities such as games, storytelling and singing. Maria Smith, Respite Facilitator, explains that this type of social interaction will often slow down the disease progression. Also it affects their outlook. Caregivers tell her that their loved one might be grumpy before going to the program, but afterwards they are much happier. She emphasizes that the earlier you get your loved one into a program like this, the better. Often, people with more progressed dementia are fearful since the care program is an unfamiliar environment and they are unable to let go of their support person.

At the Hernando County Respite Care Program, the game Bunco has become very popular. The excitement of the game can be heard in adjacent offices.
