Run to Remember
Fifteen years ago on September 11 tragedy struck American soil. There will always be the question of “why,” but as the years pass America still stands with unity and strength.
The YMCA of the Suncoast-Hernando County Branch hosted their 15th Anniversary Run to Remember on Sunday, September the 11th honoring all those that the United States of America lost on that day.
“It gives the community an opportunity to come together to honor and remember, not only the event but the lives that were impacted as well to show our patriotism to let those know that we are not going to waver and falter… to show our appreciation for all of our first responders and local community heroes,” said Amber Slusser, Branch Executive Director for the YMCA.
Participants of all ages filled the area to contribute and show their support for the fallen. Wearing their “Run to Remember” commemorative t-shirt , runners and walkers made their way through the neighborhood across the YMCA to complete the 5K course or 1-mile course to the finish line.
In attendance included Hernando County, Police and Fire Rescue as well as residents who came out to show their support.
“For the camaraderie of the brotherhood…” said Jim Zabetka, Captain for Station 3 Hernando County Fire and Rescue. “Firefighters, police officers and first responders died (on this day)… this is the way we can get together and pay our respect to our brothers and sisters that fell.”
Let us always remember on this day, September 11 that America stood and still stands in unity, pride and honor.
“We have so many seasonal (YMCA) members that were affected, I want to be there to show my support, provide my faith and hope,” Slusser said.
