On May 10, 2016, the BOCC voted unanimously to approve an ordinance placing a referendum on the November 2016 ballot calling for an additional ½ cent sales tax. As reported in the Hernando Sun, if approved by the voters, the tax would last 15 years beginning January 1, 2017.
At the July 12, 2016 BOCC meeting, Commissioner Nick Nicholson proposed another ordinance – one to repeal the referendum on the sales tax. Chairman Jim Adkins stated he was not truly in favor of the original ordinance. Given the current economic state, Adkins did not want an additional financial burden on the citizens of Hernando County.
The Board will vote on the new ordinance at the next regular meeting on 07/26/16.
